The MKGs is a four piece instrumental band with Rob on Hammond, Brian on guitar, Mark on drums and John on bass. All are experienced musicians who love what they do and are dedicated to playing the coolest grooves to give their audience a good time.
The MKGs is a brand new 4-piece band that plays energetic Hammond organ based soul, blues and jazz. Started just two months ago The MKGs are made up of 4 experienced musicians who love seeing people enjoy it.
Influenced by artists like Booker T and the MGs, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Ramsey Lewis, the James Taylor Quartet, Big Boss Man, Paul Moran and many other Hammond based groove masters they put their own stamp on the genre that is sometimes described as mod music.
Their music is perfect for clubs, pubs, corporate events and festivals where live mod music is appreciated for its danceable grooves and cool vibe.
Formed by John (bass) the members were found through the Join My Band web site and were amazed how well it all worked - right from the first rehearsal. The band all live around the Milton Keynes area and rehearse in Bletchley.
Rob plays Hammond Organ and this unique sounding instrument gives their sound an amazing feeling. Rob began playing in bands at the age of 17 and was active on the London New Wave circuit of the early 80s. His first love has always been Hammond organ and his heroes include Jimmy Smith, Booker T and John Lord. Over the past few years Rob has played in a wide range of bands, including Bad Manners, King Hammond, 24 Carat Purple, The Doors Experience and more.
Brian plays guitar and has played alongside Divine, John Cooper-Clark, The Blues Band, The Climax Blues Band, and more recently Spandau Ballet. In 2006 Brian released his first solo CD under the name of “The Man Upstairs” entitled Welcome To My World. Brian has also worked with many other artists and bands over the years such as Tick- Tock-Tick, Snakebyte, SuperServer, 3ofthe5, The Flashhouse, The Biriani Brothers and most recently was the lead guitarist with Chesham based covers band The What Now.
Mark is The MKG’s drummer and started drumming at age 19 and cut his teeth with several rock, funk and soul bands. He donned shades and a trilby with a Blues Brothers tribute, a boiler suit and bowler hat during his time playing with a Led Zeppelin tribute act and later, a tie dyed shirt when playing for a Pink Floyd tribute. Mark specialises in jazz/funk and anything with a groove.
John plays bass and is the founder of the band. He started playing bass in his school days and his music preferences range from soul, funk and R&B to jazz and blues - and John has been in bands that pretty much cover this spectrum like The Controllers, Flipside, Bear, Railroad and his other current band The Electric Blues Band.
The MKGs aim to provide a great live sound that takes their music to a new level and introduces it to existing fans of the genre and to new audiences.
Some examples from their repertoire are: · The In Crowd – Ramsey Lewis · The Cat – Jimmy Smith · Hip Hug-Her, Soul man, Green Onions, Can’t Be Still, Time Is Tight, Soul Limbo – Booker T and the MGs · All About My Girl – Jimmy McGriff · Humanize – Big Boss Man · Duffy’s Hammond – Primal Scream

Discovering the Electric Blues Band playing Oxjam Leighton Buzzard at the Conservative Club earlier in the year, the audience had battled snow, hail and lashing rain to be there!
But what an overpoweringly warm welcome these guys' earthy, stonking blues brought to the Club.
Whatever the weather outside, to the sound of Green Onions, 'the sun came out'! With more than a nod to the 1960s Black Magic Woman - Hey Jo written by Billy Roberts and not Hendrix as often stated - outstanding versions of Walkin' by Myself - Humble Pie's Natural Born Boogie - Hoochie Coochie Woman and superb harp accompaniment to Down to the Doctor, hearing Gary Moore's Stop Messing Around and Electric Blues Band for the first time, they were booked for a HARE-FEST TASTER GIG! Not to be missed!
Carol Redwood, music promoter at the Conservative Club certainly knows her bands!
